Class of 2010 Graduation update

· The Taylor Middle School Commencement Ceremony will be on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. – Noon in the Mills High School Auditorium (400 Murchison Drive, Millbrae).

· Each eligible graduate will receive three graduation ceremony tickets.

· Graduation tickets will be distributed to eligible eighth grade students on Tuesday, June 7 during their sixth period class.

· Parents in need of additional tickets should contact fellow eighth grade parents who may not need all three tickets. If you do not need all three tickets, please return tickets directly to Ms. Agles in the school office.

· If additional tickets become available a lottery will be conducted to issue additional tickets. Submit a letter requesting additional tickets to Ms. Agles by Friday, May 28, 2010. Additional tickets will be distributed to students on Wednesday, June 8, 2010.

· If parents wish to pick-up graduation tickets on Tuesday, June 7 at 3:15 p.m. (in lieu of distributing tickets to their child), please contact Nancy Agles (650.697.4096).

· The auditorium doors at Mills HS will open at 9:00 a.m. and only people with tickets will be admitted into the auditorium.

· People admitted to the auditorium may not save seats for people coming at a later time.

· The PTA will be hosting a breakfast for graduates at 8:30 a.m. in the East wing gym. Students should arrive at Mills High School no later than 8:30 a.m.

Winter Book Fair 12/08-12/10/2009

The Taylor Winter Book Fair will open on Dec 8th and will last thru Dec
10th. On Dec 7th, we will be hosting a Teacher’s Preview day where the teachers
can browse for favorite books they might be interested in and fill out a wish list.

On the opening day of Dec. 8th, we will be scheduling a "Bring Your Parent"
morning between 8:00a - 8:30a so parents can browse and shop early. A student
must be accompanied by their parent or guardian to attend this special event.
Refreshments will be served during this fun opening day.

The Taylor Book Fair connects kids with books they want to read. It features a
great assortment of books that are hand selected by Scholastic. While
generating parent involvement, the Book Fair is an event that helps raise fund
for the library.

Eighth Grade Parents ~ High School Information Night December 3rd

Attention all parents of 8th grade students. The San Mateo Union High School District will be giving and informational presentation regarding the enrollment and registration procedures for high school on: Thursday, December 3, 7:00 p.m., Mills High School Auditorium, 400 Murchison Drive, Millbrae, CA 94030

Priority Enrollment Dates: Starting on January 6, 2010 at 8am and ending on February 12, 2010 at 4:30pm. If you want to be guaranteed that your student can attend your "School of Residence", you must enroll your student between the dates above at the SMUHSD District Office. Recap of October events

“Seniors are Special Friends” program will be held on Friday, October 16, 2009. Our school district coordinates with the Millbrae Senior Center, (Recreation Department) to invite Millbrae Senior Citizens to spend a special day at all of the schools in our district. At noon all of the Senior Citizens will come together for a luncheon at Taylor Middle School and listen to a guest speaker, County Superintendent of schools, Dr. Jean Holbrook.

Red Ribbon Week is set to begin on Monday, October 19, 2009 and continue the rest of the week. This is an opportunity for Taylor Middle School teachers to continue to educate our students about the risk of alcohol, tobacco and drugs and help student understand the significance of making good choices. Students will be given a “Red Ribbon Pledge” class card in 6th period classes on Monday, October 19, 2009. Please encourage your child to participate in this class activity. At the end of the week, the class with the highest % of participation will win a prize. Please encourage your child to share information they are learning with you so that you can have meaningful discussions about the risk of using alcohol, tobacco, and/or drugs.

Leadership students will officially have theme (spirit) days from Tuesday the 20th – Friday the 23rd. Lunch activities for students will held on Monday the 19th and Wednesday the 21st.

There will be a Dance on Friday, October 23, 2009 from 3:30 -6:00 p.m. All student that meet the requirements of having good grades, attendance, and behavior will be allowed to attend. Students will be notified if they are not meeting the requirements. Leadership students we will offer prizes during the dance that are “Red Ribbon Week” themed.

Leadership students annually hold a “Costume Parade” to promote school spirit. This year it will be on October 30, 2009 at lunch time in the gym. Please help your child make wise decisions when selecting their costumes in order to limit classroom and school wide disruptions. For example, we don’t allow toy/look alike weapons, clothing that is too revealing, etc…

Taylor Music Dept. Family Bingo Night, April 18th.

Please support Taylor Music's Family BINGO Night on Saturday, April 18th at the Millbrae Community Center.

This fundraising event is for the entire Millbrae community to enjoy, and to benefit the 82 Taylor students, 20 Chaperones and 3 Teachers who are attending the Heritage Music Festival in Disneyland on May 14 - 17.

These selected music students will be representing Taylor Middle School and the Millbrae Community at a national competition, as well as performing at Disneyland's Carnation Restaurant gazebo.

The students have been rehearsing weekly, and they have been working very hard with various fundraising activities since November to assist with their trip cost.

We only have 52 more days until our buses depart for this memorable and exciting trip!

PTA Meeting Reminder & Notice of Date Change

Just a quick reminder that the next Taylor PTA meeting will be next Thursday, February 19th, in the Taylor Library at 7pm. The Executive Board will meet at 6pm, also in the Taylor Library. Superintendent Shirley Martin will be speaking at the general PTA meeting, and the main order of business for the PTA will be the upcoming fundraiser. Refreshments will be served.

Also, the date for the March PTA meeting has been changed to March 12th, due to the orientation at Mills High for incoming freshmen on the 19th. Please make a note of this date change.

NOTE REGARDING FUNDRAISER: Please remember to turn in your fundraiser forms as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will take reservations until the day before the event, and tickets may also be purchased at the door, but your advance notice will help us greatly in the planning process. Thank you!

School Budget Reduction Meetings

The Millbrae School District has scheduled two Budget Reduction Community Meetings to seek input from parents and Millbrae community members to develop a list of potential budget reductions. These budget reductions may become necessary after the Governor and Legislature enact 2008-2009 midyear budget adjustments and a 2009-2010 budget within the next few days.

Both meetings will be held at the Taylor Middle School Auditorium, 850 Taylor Blvd., Millbrae.

Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 21, 2009, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Please plan to attend one or both of these important meetings.

Action Needed!

Urgent! Please contact Senators Boxer and Feinstein TODAY and urge them to OPPOSE the Collins/Nelson amendment to H.R. 1, the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.” The amendment offered by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Ben Nelson (D-NE) would drastically reduce funding for education in the economic recovery package. It would eliminate the $15 billion Performance Incentive Grants from the State Stabilization Fund, an additional $24.8 billion from the State Stabilization Fund, $6.75 billion from IDEA, $6.5 billion from Title I, and $50 million from the Teacher Quality State Grant program. These programs do create jobs in schools, as well as prevent people from losing jobs.

The Collins/Nelson amendment could be heard in session as early as this afternoon. Please call Senator Boxer at (202) 224-3553 and Senator Feinstein at (202) 224-3841 and urge them to OPPOSE the Collins/Nelson amendment to H.R. 1.

Every call counts!

Please use the following key points when calling Senators Boxer and Feinstein:

Please oppose the Collins/Nelson amendment to H.R. 1, the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.” The investments to education programs in the stimulus are critical and will help school districts continue the level of services for key education programs and federal mandates such as special education.

The Collins/Nelson amendment will take important funding away from key K-12 education programs, especially at a time when an increased federal investment is needed to ensure that our schools can maintain the level of services needed to ensure student achievement. State and local revenues for education are in a serious decline because of the recession (e.g. falling property values and assessments, declining sales tax receipts, etc.).

Cutting funding in the stimulus is NOT the answer, especially when many school systems are trying to mitigate thousands of teacher/personnel lay-offs. The stimulus legislation is key to both job creation and to job retention, especially for the nation's school districts.

On February 2, 2009, The Millbrae School District Board of Trustees appointed two new Board Members, Jay D. Price and D. Don Revelo, as provisional appointments to the vacant positions.

We are collecting box tops again. In December of 2008, we received $600.00.

The deadline for the collection of box tops will be Monday, February 23, 2009.
Students can check for box tops on the labels and/or packaging of various products at the bottom or sides.

Collection boxes are located in the 6th and 7th grade core classes and 8th grade English classes.

The class that collects the most will be treated to a pizza party. Ms. Cahoon's class won in December.

We receive 10 cents per label, so every label counts!!!!!

Proceeds will benefit our school!!

Book Fair Volunteers needed!

The Book Fair will be held in The Taylor Library. Featuring a fresh new selection of books, cookbooks, posters, crazy pens and other cool stuff! Do some holiday shopping and support our school at the same time. Teacher’s wish lists will be available.
Parents, Shop Early! Get ahead of the crowd at Parent’s Morning on Tuesday, December 9th @7:30am. Pastries and coffee will be served!!

Holiday Cookie Buffet
